Introducing PACE: Measuring the True Impact of Union Hockey

If you have spent enough time around college hockey, you know that the traditional box score only tells half the story. A player might not score a goal, but their elite shot suppression, crucial blocked shots, and penalty discipline can be the exact reason a team wins. Conversely, a team might outplay their opponent all night, only to suffer a heartbreaking 1-goal loss due to bad “puck luck.”

To capture what is really happening on the ice, we are thrilled to introduce a massive upgrade to the Union Hockey Stats database: Player Action & Contribution Estimate (PACE).

What is PACE?

Think of PACE as the college hockey equivalent of baseball’s WAR (Wins Above Replacement).

IIV takes every measurable action a player makes on the ice and converts it into a single, standardized “Win Share.” It answers one simple question: How many wins did this specific player add to the team’s record compared to if we had just dressed an average replacement player?

How We Calculate the Impact

The engine behind PACE doesn’t treat all stats equally. It applies mathematically optimized weights to different outcomes:

  • Skaters: Goals aren’t just goals. Power Play goals are weighted slightly lower (as they are statistically easier to score), while Short-Handed goals earn a premium. We factor in primary and secondary assists, shot generation, blocked shots, and deduct points for penalty minutes.
  • The Defenseman Modifier: Defense is notoriously difficult to quantify. To accurately account for the statistical difficulty of driving play from the point, Defensemen receive a unique scaling modifier. This brings elite defensive seasons seamlessly in line with elite offensive counterparts on our leaderboards.
  • Goalies: Goalie impact normalizes time-on-ice and compares actual Save Percentage against an NCAA baseline, adjusting for the sheer volume of shots they face on any given night. Because goaltenders log 60 full minutes a game compared to a skater’s short shifts, their per-game baseline is scaled to exactly half of a skater’s output to keep absolute peaks from breaking the historical scale.

Measuring “Puck Luck”: The Expected Record

Perhaps the most exciting feature of the PACE model is our new Expected Record metric, which is now live on every historical Season List.

Multi-season regression analysis confirms that our finalized IIV model successfully explains over 90.1% of the variance in actual team standings points, and 89.2% of the variance in actual wins. By adding up the total PACE of a roster, we can accurately project what a team’s record should have been to within an incredibly tight average variance of just ±1.97 wins and ±3.83 points per season.

But we didn’t stop at just “Expected Wins.”

When analyzing the math, we found that there is zero statistical correlation between offensive generation and tie probability. Instead, we discovered a direct, positive correlation between Goaltending PACE and ties. Elite goaltending acts as a survival mechanism, actively forcing more overtime and ties.

Using this data, the PACE engine calculates a dynamic Expected Tie rate derived entirely from goaltender impact, filling the rest of the schedule out as losses. This creates a fully contextualized Expected Record (W-L-T). If a team’s actual points differ wildly from their expected points, we can finally prove whether a season was derailed by genuine underperformance, or just historically bad 1-goal “puck luck.”

How to Read the IIV Scale

When you browse Player Profiles or the new Similarity Hub, you will see PACE scores ranging from slight negatives up to the high 3s. Here is your guide to understanding the scale over a standard ~35 game season:

  • Negative to +0.59 (Replacement Level / Depth): The baseline floor. Safely eats depth minutes but doesn’t independently drive a season’s win columns.
  • +0.60 to +1.49 (Everyday Roster Contributor): A reliable middle-six forward or steady system defenseman. The standard Division 1 baseline average falls at the base of this tier.
  • +1.5 to +2.14 (Core Starter / Top-Line Catalyst): High-impact play drivers anchoring top lines or primary pairings, regularly matching up with All-Conference Third Team thresholds.
  • +2.15 to +2.74 (All-Conference / All-American Contender): Dominant conference stars pushing for premier postseason honors and All-American consideration.
  • +2.75 to +3.14 (First-Team All-American / National Elite): Elite, top-tier talents capable of commanding matchups and All-American Honors.
  • 3.15-3.75+ (Hobey Baker Finalist / Generational Legend): The absolute mountaintop of college hockey. Inner-circle legends putting up historic win shares.
